I could never really manage to tell reality and my dream world apart, for the two of them co-existed together as they slid over top of each other.

About This Quote

In Franz Kafka's novel The Metamorphosis, the main character wakes up one morning to find that he has been transformed into a bug. The first thing he does is start to make a list of the changes his new life has brought him, and one of the first things he lists is a new ability to hear two sounds at once. A human being can only hear one sound at a time. Our ears are there to sense, say, the sound of a spoon hitting the table or the sound of a truck driving past our window.

In this way, we can distinguish our reality from our dreams. But Kafka's character is able to hear two sounds at once, as if they were simply part of the same thing.
